Biddenden celebrates collection of 2016 awards

View the whole press release

Biddenden Vineyards is celebrating after having been awarded a Decanter World Wine Silver, 2 Sommelier Wine Awards and a Bronze medal in the 2016 International Cider Challenge.

First in line, Biddenden’s Ortega 2014 was awarded a Decanter Silver medal. The Decanter World Wine Awards were judged by sixty-nine Masters of Wine at Tobacco Dock in East London and this year an impressive 16,000 entries were received; making it the largest international wine competition of its kind. The judges work in small teams according to their regional or stylistic speciality in order to pick out some of the best wines on offer for consumers. All wines are blind tasted involving behind-the-scenes support from Decanter’s in-house tasting team and dozens of so-called ‘red shirts’, who are responsible for providing the wines and monitoring the process.

Second in show, Biddenden’s Pinot Reserve 2010 was awarded a Bronze Sommelier Wine Award with the judges’ comments including: “'Unusual but beautiful,' said 67 Pall Mall's Enikő Heidenwolf, going on: 'Definitely has character. Smoky nose, fruity palate and fresh finish.' 'Very distinctive tangerine and spice aromas, with almost a hint of botrytis,' agreed team leader Sam Caporn MW.” Ortega 2014 was also a Commended medal winner in the Sommelier Wine Awards. Now ten years old, the Sommelier Wine Awards is Britain’s only on-trade wine competition. All the wines are tasted blind, and by category with judges looking for food-friendliness, versatility, typicity, personality – and value for money, at whatever the price.

Finally, not to forget the award-winning cider! Biddenden’s Bushels was proud to receive a Bronze award in the International Cider Challenge 2016. Now in its seventh year, the International Cider Challenge receives entries from the UK, Ireland, France, Australia, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Japan, Spain, South Africa, New Zealand and the US. The nine-strong judging panel – comprised of buyers, award-winning independent retailers, cider experts, journalists and cider makers – awarded 19 gold medals, 44 silvers and 65 bronzes and there was much praise this year for the consistent quality of entries across the board in the competition.

Julian Barnes, Managing Director at Biddenden, comments: “We are delighted to have been awarded so many medals in the past few weeks and are extremely proud to be making award-winning English wines and ciders. As a family run business we take great care in the drinks that we craft here on the single estate vineyard in Kent. For us the wine making starts in the vineyard, with all the work still being carried out by hand and for the cider we make sure that our apples are sourced from only the best local farmers enabling us to provide our customers with the very best, locally produced drinks.”

Top wine writer praises Biddenden’s new vintages

View the whole press release

In his second instalment of a two part feature ‘English Wine Compendium’ for the Daily Mail’s Weekend Magazine Matthew Jukes, acclaimed wine writer who lived in Biddenden for a short while when he was 18, has described the vineyard as a “charming cellar door”, “one of my favourite estates” and “a pioneering winery which makes a lovely range”.

After tasting the current and upcoming vintages at the annual English Wine Producer’s Trade Tasting earlier in the year, Matthew was a particular fan of the upcoming Ortega, 2015 stating that it “is a floral, pretty little wine and the 2014 which precedes it is a delight, too.” He also complimented the Pinot Reserve, 2010 as “fairly full and combative on the palate, and great value” and the Gribble Bridge Sparkling Rosé, 2012 as “a joyous fruit bomb of a fizz with a cheeky air”. Returning to the still wines, Matthew praised the Gribble Bridge Ortega Dry, 2015 for its “fruit cocktail scent and a sleek, tangy finish” and was delighted to have found “a rare red” with the Gribble Bridge Dornfelder showing that it is possible to “cram juicy red fruit notes into a wine without any sourness or vegetal notes found in so many English reds. Bravo.”

UK’s first naturally red apple juice wins Great Taste Award 2016

View the whole press release

Biddenden Vineyards was awarded a 2-star Great Taste award for its Red Love® apple juice at Great Taste 2016.
Britain’s first naturally red apple juice, Red Love®, was described by judges as “a truly exceptional apple juice with a wonderful clarity and a lovely rounded flavour”, “the fruit comes through well and this tastes very pure” and “crisp and fruity, the balance of sweetness and acidity is spot on”.
Julian Barnes, Managing Director of Biddenden, comments: “We are overwhelmed by the kind words the judges have used to describe Red Love® and are delighted to have been awarded a 2-star Great Taste Award 2016.
“The apple juice has been very popular since its release in November 2015 and the limited edition cider is rapidly gaining an excellent reputation too.”
Made using the juice pressed straight from an apple variety called Red Love®, the special edition apple juice contains no added colourants or sugars. Red Love® is a Swiss variety which has been developed over the past 25 years by Markus Kobelt, founder of plant nursery and fruit growers Lubera. Mr Kobelt has cross-pollinated a range of red-fleshed, sweet and disease resistant apple varieties to create a naturally red skinned, red fleshed apple with a crisp and long lasting taste.

Judged by over 500 food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers.
Biddenden, the oldest continuously owned family run vineyard in England, is located in the Weald of Kent and produces an array of award winning still and sparkling English wines and ciders as well as fruit juices. All of Biddenden’s products are available from the vineyard shop, online at www.biddendenvineyards.com, and from indepedant retailers, restaurants, pubs and cafés across the South East.
