In 2015, Elephant Gin introduced a new variation of its award-winning London Dry Gin. Elephant Sloe
Gin combines the taste of the premium London Dry Gin with the classic flavour of fresh sloe
berries. Macerated in the gin for several months, these wild berries add a richly rounded,
lightly sweet and exquisitely fruity bouquet as well as a typical warm red colour to the spirit.
Compared to other sloe gins, Elephant Sloe Gin has a relatively low sugar content paired with a
higher alcohol volume of 35 percent. This makes it ideally suited to mixing in cocktails as well
as enjoying it neat. Elephant Sloe Gin is limited to 900 bottles per batch.
Since the creation of its London Dry Gin, Elephant Gin has been focusing on resolutely artisan production
methods and ensuring that only highest quality ingredients are used. The award-winning Elephant London Dry
Gin, made with rare African botanicals, has now laid the foundation for a new creation. Blended with handpicked
sloe berries, Elephant Sloe Gin introduces an extremely warm and well-balanced sweet fruity note.
Strictly speaking, a sloe gin is a not a spirit, but a liqueur made from gin and sloes. While they both have the word
“gin” in common, the colour, taste, alcohol volume, sugar content, production methods and usage of a Sloe Gin
compared to a London Dry Gin are quite different. In fact, the liquer is sweeter and has a lower alcohol content.
Its typical ingredient is the fruit of the European wild blackthorn, the sloe berry, that belongs to the family of
plums. These dark blue berries have a tart and relatively bitter taste, while being particularly rich in vitamin C.
There are many traditional home recipes for the preparation of a sloe gin. However, in the 20th century, the
manufactured liqueur lost much of its reputation when sloe syrup and artificial flavours where introduced. Today,
sloe gin is experiencing a true renaissance due to a new interest in selecting native wild fruits.
Elephant Gin exclusively uses fresh wild sloes to produce the liquer. The fruit is harvested by hand and carefully
selected - keeping only the best berries for the sloe gin production. The skin of the fruits is then cut before the
berries are left to macerate in Elephant London Dry Gin for several months. In order to retain the highest
amount of aromatic flavour components, Elephant Sloe Gin remains unfiltered and can be identified by a natural
cloudiness. The result is a red-tinted spirit that unfolds a complex bouquet bursting with flavours.
A deliberately discreet addition of sugar triggers a perfect balance between tart and sweet notes – without the
need for additional artificial flavours.
Just like its handcrafted London Dry Gin, Elephant Gin takes an entirely artisan approach to create its sloe gin.
Through constant testings and tastings, the distiller awaits the right moment to determine when to stop the
maceration of the sloes in the gin. This careful process ensures that the sloe gin has come to full fruition. In fact,
the distiller’s skill-set and sensitivity are just as important as the high-quality ingredients of fresh sloe berries and
Elephant London Dry Gin, in order to perfect the roundness of flavours.
The well thought-out bottle design emphasises the quality standards of Elephant Gin. Each bottle is custommade
and adorned with handwritten labels. The purple label of Elephant Sloe Gin is marked with the production
year and bottle number of each particular batch. A natural cork with a hand-twisted cord and seal closes every
bottle.
With an alcoholic volume of 35 percent and well-balanced sweetness, Elephant Sloe Gin can be enjoyed neat as
well as in long drinks.
About Elephant Gin
The founders of Elephant Gin have dedicated themselves to combining a great passion for gin with the love for
the African wildlife. In 2013, they developed the award-winning Elephant London Dry Gin that uses rare African
botanicals and focuses on resolutely artisan production methods. Since December 2015, the company has
complemented its portfolio with an aromatic Elephant Sloe Gin. Elephant Gin also gives back to the continent
that inspired the brand in the first place: The company donates 15 percent of all proceeds from every bottle of
Elephant London Dry Gin and Elephant Sloe Gin to two African foundations that are committed to save the
African elephant from extinction.

Elephant London Dry Gin

African Taste, German Quality
Elephant Gin (www.elephant-gin.com) is an award winning handcrafted London Dry Gin of
45% alcoholic volume, made with carefully selected ingredients that capture the spirit of
Africa. Inspired by the traditional sundowner experience after a day out in the African bush,
Elephant Gin is produced for wildlife adventurers and urban explorers alike. Handcrafted in
Germany and with high quality production standards, the gin is distilled using fourteen
botanicals, including rare African ingredients to create the gin’s distinctive flavour profile.
The company also gives back to what inspired the gin in the first place. Elephant Gin contributes 15% of all
proceeds to two African elephant foundations to support the preservation of the African wildlife and help ensure
that future generations will also be able to explore these magnificent landscapes.
Made in small batches, Elephant Gin is produced using the traditional method of copper still distillation.
The botanicals include the savannah’s “superfruit” Baobab, the extraordinary Buchu plant with a flavour similar to
blackcurrant, and the African Wormwood introducing a sharp floral note. Locally sourced spring water, fresh
apples and other select ingredients enhance the purity and smoothness of the gin’s finish. The gin’s distinct nose
first yields a subtle juniper aroma, with an undertone of mountain pine and other herbaceous notes. The taste is
complex but strikingly smooth, encompassing floral, fruity and spicy flavours, which can be enjoyed both straight
and in a cocktail.
Elephant Gin’s bottles are custom-made, adorned with hand-written labels, embossed with a crest and sealed
with natural cork. Each batch is named after past great tuskers or elephants that Elephant Gin’s partners
currently help to protect.
The team behind Elephant Gin are Robin and Tessa Gerlach, who were inspired to create Elephant Gin following
their own travels as well as their work supporting foundations in South Africa. With a vision to conserve the
wildlife they feel so passionate about, the couple decided to launch a product that would help conservation trusts.
Together with their friend Henry Palmer, they worked to bring the product to market. They strongly believe that
this generation has a responsibility to support the African wildlife today, so others can continue to enjoy it in the
future.
Robin said: “Integrity and passion is at the heart of Elephant Gin’s philosophy: from carefully sourcing ingredients
and using the best techniques to create a premium product, to creating a sustainable, ethical business that
supports Africa’s unique wildlife.
“As well as actively supporting the foundations devoted to the conservation of wildlife, we hope to raise wider
awareness and involve more people directly. We believe that the first step to changing the world is to have the
right spirit,” added Tessa.

About Elephant Conservation
Every year more than 35,000 elephants die because of uncontrolled ivory poaching; that is one every 15 minutes.
Elephant Gin donates 15% of its profits to two inspirational African elephant foundations:
Big Life Foundation is an anti-poaching organisation, which protects two million acres of wilderness in the
Amboseli-Tsavo ecosystem of East Africa (www.biglife.org). Elephant Gin’s contributions go toward one outpost
to fund 8 rangers’ salaries, rations & equipment (e.g. tents, rucksacks, sleeping bags) for 3 months at a time.
Space For Elephants is focused on restoring the old migratory routes that were lost when game reserves were
fenced, and aims to give freedom to thousands of elephants to range freely across Africa
(www.space4elephants.org).
