Franklin & Sons unveils new flavour to bring out the best in spirits

View the whole press release

Vodka is the single biggest sub-category of premium spirits in the on trade and is growing by 7.6%, more than Brandy, Whiskey, and White Rum. Franklin & Sons has focused on being a solid foundation for the best of spirits and is supporting this demand by presenting a full range of natural mixers. This offering has been bolstered by the introduction of the latest flavour “Original Lemonade”. This fresh new addition provides a clear and zesty flavour that holds a complex sweetness on the palate, making it delectable as a mixer with vodka and other premium spirits, or as a standalone drink.

Recognisable by its balanced taste and uplifting finish, Original Lemonade contains one of the highest percentages of natural lemon juice on the market, specifically sourced from Argentinian lemons to achieve its impressive citrus hit in a beautifully clear liquid. As with the rest of the Franklin & Sons range it is blended with Staffordshire spring water and natural British sugar, with no artificial colours or flavours and absolutely no preservatives or sweeteners.

Franklin & Sons is passionate about supporting the best of spirits and therefore the entire mixer range has been developed with guidance from Shaker Bar School and is designed to meet the exacting standards of today’s mixologists, as well as the expectations of an increasingly discerning consumer.

Franklin & Sons have seen unprecedented success since the launch of their premium tonics and mixers in December 2015 and since winning 6 stars in the recent Great Taste Awards the demand has continued to soar. The range is now available in 20 International Markets and has secured reputable listings such as; The Great Northern Hotel, Grosvenor House Hotel as well as distribution iconic locations such as in Harrods and Selfridges.

Justin Horsman, Marketing Controller at Global Brands said “Franklin & Sons is a brand rooted in its Victorian heritage and has a passion for original, great tasting drinks. We strive to use the best quality ingredients, specially procured from around the world in order to deliver a high quality taste. We wanted to create a lemonade that stands out as a great serve alone yet is also brought to life when used as a mixer with premium spirits.”
The Original Lemonade flavour is produced in single serve 200ml recyclable embossed glass bottles along with the rest of the family of flavours. The high carbonation helps to reinforce the fresh taste and releases the subtle botanical aromas. The new packaging consists of a powder blue colour to match the award winning range yet to stand out in its own right.

Franklin & Sons Premium Soft Drinks Botanically Crafted Tonics and Mixers scoop Six Stars at Great Taste Awards

View the whole press release

Great Taste, the world’s most coveted blind-tested food and drink awards, described as the Oscars of the food and drink industry, has announced Franklin & Sons as winners of six Great Taste stars. Out of Franklin & Sons’ premium soft drinks range, Brewed Ginger Beer with Malted Barley and a squeeze of lemon was awarded 2 Great Taste stars, whilst British Dandelion & handpicked Burdock with Star Anise was awarded 1 star. The natural range of tonics and mixers did extremely well, taking home 3 stars out of the 4 entered mixers. Franklins Ginger Ale, Natural and Lemon Tonics each received 1 star, with judges saying “the flavour was sharp, not too sweet, clean and fresh”.

The awards are judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers. Great Taste is simply about taste, not clever branding or smart packaging.

“We are delighted to receive such prestigious reconition from the Great Taste panel. The comments were even better than we hoped for”, explains Justin Horsman, Franklin & Son’s Brand Controller. “Winning these prestigious awards not only cements our credibility for creating only the most premium soft drinks, tonics and mixers, but also reflects the hard work and time invested into the Franklin & Sons range. It is really gratifying to see that such well-respected professionals appreciate the true heritage and provenance of our ever expanding range of products. We are so excited to see what the future holds.”

Steve Perez, Chairman of Global Brands said, “I am very proud of the Franklin & Sons team, winning so many awards for the new range of soft drinks and mixers in our very first year. I thank them for their hard work and skills. They have produced World Class products true to the heritage of the brand and these awards are a great accolade to all of them.”

Out of over 10,000 products entered into Great taste 2016 only 878 received a 2 star award. Whether it be bread, honey, salami or cereal being judged, all products are removed from their wrapper, jar, box or bottle before being tasted. The judges then savour, confer and re-taste to decide which products are worthy of a 1-, 2- or 3-star award (only 181were awarded 3 stars in 2016). Franklin & Sons has been listed in Harrods for four months and it was fantastic to see the Harrods buyers agreed with the stars awarded.

A selection of the judges comments below:

“Bright and with distinct tonic notes and a bitter lemon dimension. The flavour is sharp, not too sweet, clean and fresh. Just bring on the gin.” (Sicillian Tonic)

“Love it! Brings back memories – made very well with a good carbination, sweet and with spices – a delicious blend.” (Dandelion and Burdock)

“Fresh and with gentle carbonation – The Chincona is botanical and very natural. There is a good dryness to this drink. (Natural Indian Tonic Water)

The panel of judges included; TV chef and author, Valentine Warner, MasterChef judge and restaurant critic, Charles Campion, fifth generation baker, Tom Herbert from Hobbs House Bakery, and Great British Bake Off winner, Frances Quinn; food buyers from Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, Harvey Nichols and Waitrose and chefs including, James Golding, chef director of THE PIG Hotels, and Kevin Gratton, chef director of HIX Restaurants.

What is Great Taste?
Great Taste is the largest and most trusted accreditation scheme for fine food and drink. Established in 1994, it encourages and mentors artisan food producers, offering a unique benchmarking and product evaluation service leading to an independent accreditation that enables small food and drink businesses to compete against supermarket premium own label brands.

Since 1994 over 110,000 products have been assessed. This year 10,000 products were blind-tasted by panels of specialists: top chefs, cookery writers, food critics, restaurateurs and fine food retailers.

What are Great Taste judges looking for?
They’re looking for great texture and appearance. They judge the quality of ingredients and how well the maker has put the food or drink together. But above all, they are looking for truly great taste.

How do they work?
Each team of four judges blind-tastes around 25 products per session, discussing each product as a coordinating food writer transcribes their comments directly onto the Great Taste website which producers access after judging is completed. Over the years, numerous food businesses, start-ups and well established producers have been advised how to modify their foods and have subsequently gone on to achieve Great Taste stars. Food or drink that is deemed worthy of Great Taste stars is also tasted by a team of arbitrators, who taste, confer and agree on the final award given. If judges feel that a product needs some adjustment, and therefore not likely to receive an award, the food or drink gets a second chance on a referral table, where another team, blind-tastes and deliberates. For a Great Taste 3-star award, the vast majority in the room - which can be as many as 30-40 experts - must agree that the food or drink delivers that indescribable ‘wow’ factor.

What should consumers look for?

The logo. The Great Taste symbol is their guarantee a product has been through a rigorous and independent judging process. It’s not about smart packaging or clever marketing – it’s all about taste.

After a fantastic year of growth, premium tonics brand Franklin & Sons targets London consumers with its latest “In the Best of Spirits” drinks campaign

View the whole press release

Franklin & Sons forecasts its advertising, launching this week, will hit a reach of over 9 million as it appears across key central London locations throughout this crucial trading period.

Premium drinks brand Franklin & Sons continues to build on its fantastic first year success by investing in key underground across track tube locations. The campaign utilises a mix of major commuter and tourist sites including Oxford Circus, Convent Garden, Green Park and Canary Wharf. The advert features the brands classic Natural Indian Tonic Water, as part of their ‘In the best of spirits’ marketing campaign.

Throughout the festive season, the call for more premium products in the FMCG sector heightens with brands experiencing double digital sale uplifts*. The Franklin & Sons tube adverts will first appear December 5th, and will run for the following two weeks to coincide with this crucial time period.

Justin Horsman, Brand controller at Franklin & Sons says the campaign is an important element of the marketing investment for the company. “Our first ever advertising campaign on the Tube signals a gear change in the level of marketing support for Franklin & Sons in the UK, as we continue to win listings and grow our market share. This campaign demonstrates to consumers the difference that Franklin & Sons makes to the best of spirits. It is fantastic we are able to support both on and off trade accounts during this busy trading period.”

With London fast becoming the frontrunner for the best food and drink offerings in the world, tube advertising is a perfect fit for the Franklin & Sons audience. Studies show 79% of commuters have responded to a tube ad, with underground travellers welcoming advertising and being more receptive as a result. A staggering five million passenger journeys are made daily, with a 3 minute average platform dwell time.* This ensures the Franklin & Sons advert will allow consumers to view and absorb key product information as well as ensuring retention, recall and ultimately motivating them to purchase.

“We have an award-winning range of tonics and mixers to match the ever-increasing range of gins available to London’s discerning drinkers, who clearly want a wider choice than the tonic brands already on offer. The craft spirit revolution has brought with it demands for high quality, authentic tonics and mixers with heritage – and that’s what we’re delivering at Franklin & Sons.”
