At IFE, the UK’s largest food and drink exhibition, Uncle John’s Bakery will be bringing its unique range of specialist, African baked products to the food and drink industry for the first time. Buyers from around the country will have the opportunity to sample Uncle John’s range of produce specifically aimed to diversify retailers, hospitality and foodservice venue’s offerings to consumers.
The company was established 20 years ago and is a family business at heart, birthed as a result of Nana Mary, Uncle John’s mother, passing down the family’s secret sweet bread recipe. When John Mensah and his wife Emelia arrived in the UK they didn’t want other Ghanaians to miss out, and wanted to help them feel closer to home with their sweet bread recipe. Within 3 years the enterprise had outgrown the small shared baking unit and found a site in North London where they still bake onsite to this day, helping them to share authentic, delicious Ghanaian baking with the rest of the UK.
The Bakery offers freshly baked bread, cakes and snacks from their London bakery to distributors, independent stores, supermarkets and to loyal consumers who purchase in store. “As the original family baker of Ghanaian sweet bread and other baked goods, our mission is to continue to deliver you fresh, soft to the touch bread that brings you the home from home experience wherever you are in the world “said Managing Director Sam Mensah.
With the sales of ethnic food products in the UK continuing to grow the market is now worth an impressive £1.367m and Uncle Johns’ is keen to help food operators across the country capitalise on an ever discerning public’s desire for something different when making their food choices. The Bakery has invested in new premises to help deal with the demand. “Our new facilities give us the space to increase our work flow, which will also give us the space for bigger machines. This will aid us in automating parts of production and enable us to cut costs. We have outgrown our old premises. With more space, the new premises will allow us to stock more products, fulfil larger orders, and ultimately share our special products with new and exciting customers” stated Mensah.

Some of Uncle John’s most popular items include:
• Sweet Bread: An Uncle John’s classic made with sweet spices and a touch of Madagascan vanilla. Also available as a smaller sweet bread roll.
• Cocoa Bread: Our amazing cocoa bread is made with Ghanaian fair trade cocoa to create this signature loaf from our roots.
• Tea Bread: Made the artisan way, hand rolled, these speciality breads are shaped like mini baguettes, slightly crustier, yet soft and fluffy on the inside.
• Butter Bread: A sandwich makers dream! Another traditionally classic loaf. Great sliced thick or thin.
• Buns Bread: Rich in taste with sweet spices this bread is also another favourite in Ghanaian culture.
• Bo-Flot (Doughnut): This traditional Ghanaian doughnut is a popular street food enjoyed by many as a result of the sweet spices and expertise of Uncle John’s secret recipe
Uncle John’s Bakery already supplies the likes of Tesco and Wanis and at IFE, they are excited to add to the growing list of satisfied companies that they work with. They’ll be offering a special introductory offer of 20% off first orders for new customers they meet at the show, and see IFE as the first step of an African bakery revolution across the Hospitality and Foodservice industry in the UK.
