AMBA Estate is a pioneering organic and artisanal estate located in the Uva Highlands of Sri Lanka, near Bandarawela, at elevations of approximately 1,200–1,500 meters. The cool climate, frequent mist, and distinctive Uva terroir contribute to teas with exceptional aroma, clarity, and complexity.
AMBA Estate was founded with a strong commitment to social and environmental sustainability, intentionally moving away from conventional plantation models. The estate is fully organic, focusing on soil health, biodiversity, and environmentally responsible farming practices. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are avoided, and land management is guided by long-term ecological balance, protecting both the surrounding environment and future productivity of the estate.
Social sustainability is central to AMBA’s philosophy. The estate operates a transparent revenue-sharing system, allowing workers to directly share in the value created. Instead of traditional “tea pluckers,” AMBA works with trained tea artisans who are involved not only in harvesting but also in processing, quality control, and continuous improvement. This model recognizes skill, builds professional pride, and supports fair, dignified livelihoods through shared responsibility and knowledge.
AMBA Estate is best known for producing small-batch artisanal teas, including expressive black, green, white, and experimental specialty teas, all produced with high traceability from field to cup. Every stage of production is carefully documented, ensuring transparency, accountability, and a clear connection between people, place, and product.
Beyond tea, the estate also produces artisanal coffee, handcrafted jams, and chutneys, applying the same principles of quality, sustainability, and high traceability. In addition, AMBA Estate engages in responsible tourism, welcoming visitors who wish to experience organic farming, ethical production, and artisanal craftsmanship at origin. Through this integrated approach, AMBA Estate demonstrates how agriculture, community, and sustainability can grow together.
