This year, IFE is proud to partner with the Food is GREAT campaign, a government initiative that supports UK food and drink businesses by increasing positive public perception and demand of UK food and drink around the world.

Food is GREAT, led by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and the Department for International Trade (DIT), supports businesses to take the leap and sell their food and drink products abroad.

One company benefitting from the campaign is Cumbrian jam and relish producer Hawskhead Relish, who’ve recently shipped 40,000 jars of strawberry daiquiri jam to Germany after securing the lucrative sale on an overseas trade mission.

Starting out as a boutique café in 2001, Hawkshead’s products have won over 60 Great Taste Awards. The business currently exports around 10% of its output overseas.

Hawkshead’s recent deals come as a result of trade missions to Europe with support from the Food is GREAT campaign, where the company was also introduced to other contacts in Sweden and France that have now become regular customers.

This latest deal will see a major German wine club supplier sending out a customer offer of Hawkshead’s finest preserves to all of its top customers.

Maria Whitehead MBE, co-owner of Hawkshead Relish Co, explains how the Food is GREAT campaign is helping her business access new markets around the world:

 “We started as a simple café in the middle of the Lake District, but now thanks to exporting, we’re shipping our fundamentally British jams, chutneys and relishes to customers across Europe.

“With the help of Food is GREAT, we’re one step closer to trading to new markets and maximising our overseas growth potential.

“We’ve been working closely with our International Trade Adviser who has helped us enter new markets and ensure we are speaking to the right people. We’re excited about future opportunities both in Europe and further afield.”
