Morrisons to bring back select Market Street meat and fish counters
Morrisons is bringing back selected Market Street meat and fish counters after listening to customer feedback, marking a reversal of one of the supermarket's most significant in-store changes of recent years.
The retailer closed a number of meat and fish counters in 2025 as part of a wider cost-saving programme. It has now confirmed that the traditional counters are returning to selected stores, with the first five locations already reopened and more set to follow over the coming months.
A Morrisons spokesperson said: “Our Market Street counters are part of our DNA. They are at the heart of our offer and a real differentiator for Morrisons.
“We closed a small number of meat and fish counters last year - and have learned a lot from that. We have listened to customers and are now planning to re-open a number of these over the coming months. So, customers can look forward to having skilled butchers and fishmongers back in store to prepare their meat and fish just the way they like it.
“The re-opened counters will incorporate flatbeds and grab and go options, and all of the significant learnings on yield and waste that the business has made over the last twelve months, to make them more efficient, while delivering the traditional counter service that customers love.
“The first meat and fish counters have already re-opened at Great Park Newcastle, Herne Bay, Thornbury, Yeadon and Bolton Dawes, with more to follow soon.”
The stores confirmed to receive reopened Market Street meat and fish counters are Great Park Newcastle, Herne Bay, Thornbury, Yeadon, Bolton Dawes, Speke, St Helens, London Queensbury, Chapel-en-le-Frith, London Enfield, Bath London Road, Todmorden and Porth.
For food and drink suppliers, the move reinforces the continued value retailers place on specialist fresh food departments. While the redesigned counters incorporate more efficient merchandising and grab-and-go options, Morrisons is betting that skilled service remains a differentiator for shoppers.
